I wonder if they ever will step up to plate given the current environment. It seems the only place where they think they might have a fair chance to have their voices heard is at the courts. Isn't that a little bit drastic? I give credit to Shank for making the effort to try to resolve the situation. You said it yourself "He stepped up to the plate with his check book..." and this to me means that he bought his way into town, which might strike some fear into the town's fathers. They obviously do not want to lose control to outsiders and their checkbooks.
The townspeople and the foundation really need to have a positive relationship. To back off from offering freindly gestures will not make it happen.
I can see that there might come a time to fish or cut bait, however!
