In round numbers, our old Imperial Gallon was about 1.2 US Gallons so yeh, a little bigger. And it must have been quite a while since you visited because we've officially been metric since 1975. Not everything could be changed over immediately of course, but today fuel and other liquid measures are in litres (about a quart).
Distances are in kilometres, which is about 2/3 of a mile. And a metre is about a yard. My kids and grandkids have no concept of what a foot or inch is. But interestingly, railway mileposts are still in miles - go figure.
Cheers,
Ralph
