Alamosa was a "head in" house, Durango was a "back in", as was Gunnison and Salida. Chama was a "back in" in the 2-8-0 days. The RGS house in Ridgway was both, but K-27's couldn't fit on the turntable and could only run straight across it to the house. One could guess the Alamosa house was taller in the rear to accommodate standard gauge power.
One can could assume the design of the roundhouses having a roof sloping down to the rear was the determining factor. The Durango house had to have the roof over some of the stall raised so that a K-37's doghouse would clear the roof.
Kelly makes an interesting point.
