Tragedy At South Baker - They Would Rebuild

March 02, 2024 12:30PM avatar
On the night of Jan. 20th, 1921 tragedy struck the Sumpter Valley Ry. The 12 stall round house at South Baker caught fire damaging the engines stored inside. Based on photos, the four north most stalls to the left of this photo were least damaged and probably repairable thanks to a partition wall. The other eight stalls required complete rebuilding. In this shot we see that reconstruction is well under way for three of those. The forlorn engine on the left of the shot is probably #20 which was less than a year old at the time. The scan is from the SVRR Archive.
