Today most early logging methods look like an accident in progress, but such methods were commonly used and were no more dangerous than many other other jobs. It was a matter of doing the best they could with what they had. Those two wheeled carts, called bummers, were used for many years, with steel versions used behind early crawler tractors until supplanted by arches. Note that one end of the logs drags on the ground and they probably adjusted the balance to fit the terrain, putting more of the weight on the rear when skidding down hill.
