I like this photo of a tiny train in a sea of sagebrush as a storm builds in the distance
483 is passing the closed Dulce depot.
4.4 miles west of Dulce the train entered the Navajo River canyon and for some 8 miles there was no road access to the railroad. While the train had an easy run downriver to Juanita, Ernie left the train at Dulce and made a circuitous dirt road diversion to reach Juanita without going the long way via Pagosa Springs.
Not surprisingly, by the time Ernie was able to navigate those dirt roads to Juanita, the train was long gone. Ernie finally caught up with the train west of Gato. He drove ahead and crossed the San Juan River bridge leading south to the site of Carracas (The Carracas passing siding used by the San Juan passenger trains was on the north side of the river). Ernie took this panoramic shot of the train traversing the relocated track around the Navajo reservoir.
