I remember hearing about 20 on the Farmington Branch, but didn't know the 4-6-0s were used that much on the rest of the RR. Hope photos of them in D&RGW service turn up (like the one Joe mentioned he saw). Thanks for the awesome details, Jerry and Herb, exactly the stuff I hoped for and more!
Thank you Joe for sharing what you've found. I recall the RGS occasionally had engines shopped at Alamosa, but for whatever reason the thought of the SN doing the same never crossed my mind. Makes sense though, Alamosa's facilities would have been much more equipped than Silverton's and ideal for heavy shopping. The stories of SN 1, 3, F&CC 2-8-0s, etc are terrific
