It is an awesome trip in either direction. The higher elevations are well above treeline. I traveled the line 24+ times while I was an exchange student at the University of Bergen, 1973-1974. (Student discount fares helped a lot!)
The original route between Bergen and Voss was bypassed years ago by long tunnels. Part of the original mainline near Voss is now operated by the Gamle Vossebanen [

If you have time, take the side trip from Myrdal to Flåm, then continue to Bergen by ferry (5.5 hours, well worth the time) [

You can also stay at a rustic hotel in Flåm, and continue by ferry the next day, or visa versa.
