I read once of a buyer of one of the tiny Porter 0-4-0 tank engines who fired it up and ran it over 18 miles of dirt roads to get it to his isolated railroad. I don't recall if it said how many days it took to get there, but I'll bet he was happy to finish that trip!
I believe that when new, the Glenbrook and her sister were hauled to their home with teams of oxen.
As I understand it, one locomotive builder in Great Britain was not located on any railroad, and every engine they built was hauled out of the factory on heavy trailers hauled by steam traction engines. I recall seeing a photo of a good-sized Pacific getting ready to be on her way behind double headed steam tractors.
