Thank you for the photos of No.8. For those of you who had a chance to operate No. 8, how did it compare to Shay's 12 & 14? I only saw No. 8 run once, probably either in 1979 or 1980. When my father and I arrived in Silver Plume the train with Shay 8 was running late. When the train finally arrived, the crew was scrambling around as they had a big leak in the pipe that runs between the cylinders and the smokebox. The crew was trying to figure out a quick fix with a load of passengers waiting. I don't remember what they did to fix it, but they were in a hurry to get moving again. I spent time there as an adult in 1999 & 2000. Shay 8 was long out of service along with 44. No. 40 was either being worked on to be sent to Alaska or was already there. Shay's 12 & 14 were the only steam running. I always remember 14 as a good locomotive to fire and it just seemed like she would do whatever you asked her to do. Shay 12 was definitely more challenging to fire and she liked to spend a lot of time in the shop. It was all great memories that I will never forget. I wish I had spent more time there when the Shay's were in operation.
