I fired and ran No. 8 frequently after it's return to service in 1979. It was a wonderful steamer and could pull just about anything you put behind it up the hill.
Unfortunately, WSL used it up pretty good and we did the minimal amount of work to return to service and keep it as reliable as possible with safety in mind. As it went into the 1980 season, it was starting to show the weak areas that needed more attention than we knew at the time it was returned to service. Leaking steam, a tendency to "fling" minor loose parts into the trees and an eventual broken cylinder head made continual maintenance and repair common until removed from service.
John Bush may have more insight as I only worked on it in 1979 and early 1980 before booming on to the C&TS.
No. 14 was always a pleasurer to work on as fireman and engineer. I only worked on No. 12 during the 1987 season and I seemed to break something on it every time I ran it.
