Re: Water on the Rio Gallegos - Rio Turbio run. The railroad runs through pretty dry countryside, but substantial rivers are not far from the line. Intermediate water stops are supplied by windmill powered well pumps. Water stops are far apart, and extra water is carried in a coal car converted into a water car right behind the tender, as seen in the photo below. The water car is easily distinguished by the handrails on top of the car, as well as by" AGUA" stencilled on the side of the car. One reference source states that the only water stop is at Bella Vista, but I can't verify that, as Bella Vista is as far as we rode the train from Rio Gallegos, our passenger car being switched to an opposing freight there (to keep our trip within daylight hours).
The next day was a free day, and a few of us organized a car and driver and chased freights. Here are some shots of a heavy coal train east of Bella Vista
