99, 100, 101 were black, while the earlier class 42's were green. That's the only noteworthy difference between the two batches, and it's not apparent in B&W photography. I know you know this; I'm only posting for the benefit of others who may not be so familiar. The photograph posted above is extremely high-quality, and larger versions clearly display all the intricate paint trim that was part of typical styling back then. The later modification done to this engine's appearance (straight stack, extended smokebox, smooth dome casings, completely revised paint styling) mirror what the D&RG did to some members of the class around the same time as well as trends in railroad styling more generally.
