FWIW, Marvin indicated it was a burning rag that dropped out of 489's firebox that started the fire, perhaps most likely left over from the initial light-off of the loco. Something that is totally preventable, but, that being said, oil burners are not immune to starting fires, just not as often, hence the move in that direction.
It is understandable that we are all passionate about one thing or another, the coal vs oil burners "debate" is one of those, just a fact of life, I guess. While I also love the smell of coal smoke and steam, the present day and future $$$ realities will determine what the future holds and I am OK with having operating steam locomotives, coal or oil fired, as opposed to dead and either stuffed and mounted or left to rust, hulks.
My 1.5 cents worth, and nothing more.
