As someone whose travel is now limited to the internet and TV, I wonder how much did the general public know about this event, plus the earlier Steamapalooza on the C&TS? These were certainly amazing fetes, but how far did the news extend beyond the train geek media? Did they get more than 30 seconds on the local TV news? Were national outlets contacted in advance (CBS Sunday Morning News, CNN, etc.)? During my years of restoring a locomotive at the Shelburne Museum, I found much of the visiting public to have at least a latent interest in locomotives and railroads, but few today have had much contact with them. All of my helpers were simply community "doers"; railfans were conspicuous by their absence.
