The brief cab ride on "Smokey" was the first time I ever rode on a stoker fired engine. I was not prepared for how LOUD the stoker jets are. There wasn't much conversation. I don't know how that 25NC acquired her name, though she clearly earned it based on the pictures (and the cinders in my eyes). Little did I know then that I'd be distracted by the sight and sound of her 25NC sisters rolling by the fireman training classroom every few minutes on their way to the ash pit in the Beaconsfield locomotive terminal 3 years later...
