Re: Builder of SMOKEY, SAR 3415 - My information is that 3401 - 3411 were built by North British in 1954. 3412 - 3450 were built by Henschel in 1953. 3415 was thus in the group built by Henschel.
However all of the 25NCs included a substantial contribution by the USA. The cylinders and frames were cast in one piece by Commonwealth Steel Company in the United States, and Timken
roller bearings were used throughout.

Re: Smoke generation - SMOKEY"s name by her crew doesn't mean that SMOKEY emitted smoke all the time - much of the time the engine worked with a fairly clear stack as seen below
