It probably processed silver. The book
The Gunnison Country by Vandenbusch makes several references to Pitkin as a sliver mining town. The mill in question was on the tail of the wye on the west side of Pitkin, and shows up on the far left of this photo. I made this by stitching together scans from two glass plate negatives in Bob Schoppe's collection. The original photographer was nice enough to provide just enough overlap between the two photos to allow this to be done, but I doubt he even dreamed it would be possible to make such a seamless panorama from his two shots. The depot is at the far right.
