After 488's flue time expired in 1966, the plow was removed and stored next to the roundhouse on the ground. 488 was placed underneath the "unwheeling hoist" where it sat for about three years. When 486 was donated to the Royal Gorge/Cañon City (~1969), 488 joined the other retirees along with 487 which was pulled out of the roundhouse. There are pictures of 483 with the Park Service Special waiting to leave Durango that show "488" in chalk on the plow.
