Ladies and Gentleman-I think we have a winner!

Of all things! I checked some more photos of the outfit cars, and what you say makes absolute sense. The 04280 had the windows closer to the ends just like the 2nd-04466 in a photograph from 1949, and the later photograph shows the windows close on the 04280. I never would have believed it...I have to wonder whatever happened to the 04545. It's in that photo at Rockwood in 1969.
I'm curious now how you figured this out. Did you just look at the photos, hear it from someone, seen it in the records? I have to wonder whether something like that would have been recorded. It certainly opens up a potential can of worms, even though it was probably rare.
As for scale, I model HOn3, got a large layout that I've been building with my Dad over the past 5 years. I wanted some outfit cars for the layout and I was able to arrange some specially cut cars from Alamosa Car Shops that had the right window and door configurations. Sadly, the 04466 and it's brothers sit at a local hobby store awaiting some decal placement. I'm still unable to get Thinfilm decals on without ripping them no matter what I do.
