A real puzzlement

Something to hopefully take some people's mind off of current GLRR woes, even momentarily.
Ever since I had a model of the 04466 Kitchen Car special ordered, I started seeing some interesting discrepencies. In the two photos in NG Pictorial 10, there are two very different window arrangements shown. I thought at first that it was just opposite sides of the car shown when it was pointed out to me that the brake staff was on the right in both shots. Hmm...
Much later, I happened to notice that the photos I shot of the car with painted number 04466 in the Durango yard didn't match those of the new configuartion of car 04466. And I know that the car 04466 that was roaming the D&RGW in the 60's had this new wider arrangement of windows on both sides because of a shot of 04965 in NG Pictorial 10.
Now, I got to thinking that this was another case of mistaken painting, which has happened several times. (I've found two sets of duplicate gon numbers, one set, cars numbered 842 were both stenciled on! Only problem was that the 842 near the main track was of the wrong class. I think a "Doh!" is appropriate here). Two problems though. First, why would the D&RGW change the positions of the window cutouts in an outfit car? They blanked out windows over the years, but why would they go through the trouble of covering the old ones (Which if they did, they did a darn good job because I can't see them), and put in new windows? Second, the car lettered 04466 in Durango very much resembled the old photo of 04466.
I have two theories at this point: the original 04466 was replaced by an imposter numbered 04466 that had been another outfit car, and this car subsequently dissapeared and the real 04466 is the car in existance today. Or, the 04466 was changed, and it disappeared and the car in existance today is another car. Maybe it is 04266, a car which I have never seen a photo of, but is reported in the CO PUC as being sold to the D&S?
If I seem nuts to some of you guys, that's just fine. I probably am <img class=" /> But, if anyone wants put in their two cents on this, that'd be great. This kind of thing bugs me because somewhere along the line, a mistake was made or covered up, and I want the answer!
Happy hunting to interested parties.
