This isn't a hobby. It's a railroad. And having a hot locomotive with headlight on means "ready to move at any time". You simply don't take chances on having someone in a blind spot being oblivious. A gentle/kind reminder is fine and not unreasonable. Your bristling is not reasonable - your offense fails to recognize that the other person cares about you not being an injury statistic like that woman hit 3 years ago by the 844 because she didn't stand clear of the track.
