I grew up in Champaign, Illinois .. National City managed to get the city to change to buses and the extensive streetcar lines were abandoned (though the track stayed in place for some time ... I remember getting my bike tires caught in a passing track girder rail and getting dumped onto the pavement in front of a taxi cab.)
I was fortunate enough to grow up a block from the Illinois Terminal/IC RR joint line and saw the end of electric passenger and freight operations there.
