Sumpter Valley 1897

This photo was taken in 1897 at the Sumpter Valley Ry. South Baker yard. We see Books mogul #1 moving a standard gauge freight car, Brooks Mogul #2 with the passenger train and an unidentified engine on the right. The stone building was the Oregon Lumber Co.'s "company store". I have hear speculation that the standard gauge box car "SV" marking was added by the photographer rather than the Sumpter Valley actually owning standard gauge box cars. The scan is from the SVRR Archive.
