My Grandfather had a 250 acre farm on the Susquehanna River near the NY-PA border and the DL&W RR ran through the property. Gramp had milk cows and they fed in the lower acreage along the river. The cows were trained to come to the barn after the DL&W ran the afternoon train. One day, the train was late and the cows, knowing the feed was waiting at the barn and they would be milked, started home. As about half were below the track, many on the track, and my Grandfather heard that late train crossing the creek, less than 1/2 mile away. He and his father tried to split the herd. The cows didn't pay attention until they heard the whistle blasting at them.
Gramp lost over half the herd and the rest were so exited, no milk was recovered from the survivors. Gramp lost the herd and sold the survivors. He then became a driver for the dairy company where he had sold his milk .
