A fellow I used to work with was riding local Amtrak on the last leg to Lancaster, PA when his train hit a full grown cow standing crosswise of the track at 110 MPH. The cow didn't suffer. He noted the deceleration, and a hell of a clatter of cow parts under the car that had him thinking that they were derailed. Turns out all that had to be corrected was a drain valve that had opened under one of the cars. My friend called his wife who was waiting at the station to take special note of how the font of the engine looked as they came in. She described it as "looking like it had gone through a mud bog".
