Do stay around Moab and visit Arches National Park. Much can be seen from the road, or you can do some walks. Photography is good all day, and some are better in morning or afternoon. We stayed in some motel with a pool where supposedly John Wayne had stayed. It was summer and really hot. My daughter and I hit their pool, and it was so warm it almost made us sick, so we got out and headed for the AC in the room!!! Neat area though, and they have rafting around there as well which looked fun. Not really that far from Durango either.
