In Rio Grande Glory Days pg 113, Gilbert Lathrop writes that back before WWI he and Elmer (Sport) Weirick used to call crews as part of their job as junior helpers in the Gunnison roundhouse. I understand in larger terminals where there would be scores of trains and crews, there were dedicated kids/junior staff hired specifically for this, much like messengers on bikes delivered telegrams back in the day. All this before the era when most households had telephones of course.
