Re: Morenci Southern NG hike and overlay - MP 6-8

This will be the final segment for our outing on April 17th and covers MP 6 - 8. A couple of bridges, several deep cuts and the two tunnels on the south side of the San Francisco River. The total hiking distance was over 5 miles and it was nice to make it to all three of the tunnels. Quite a bit of this was new ground for me except for a prior visit to tunnels 1 and 2 with a lot less hiking.

Thanks for taking a look and I hope that you enjoyed the virtual hike over a portion of this long gone NG route. As time permits I'll be adding more of the map overlay and shots from a couple of earlier hikes further to the south.

This static view of the map provides the new additions:


Just below MP 7 was the site of a frame trestle approximately 200 feet in length.


Many deep cuts are found on the way up to the tunnels.


As the grade turns eastward views of the San Francisco River below are a welcome site.


The alignment of the two tunnels makes for some nice tunnel in a tunnel shots.


The chase vehicle parked up on top of tunnel 2 was good to see after coming out of tunnel 1 on this three mile hike.


The bighorn sheep provided some entertainment for the crew while waiting.


The final shot of the day is pointed back at where it all started earlier in the day at the north end of the San Francisco River bridge site. This was taken from the top of tunnel 2 and provides a view of the light colored fill east of tunnel 2 and the lower and upper legs of the balloon loop at left with tunnel 3 further to the north. Some tunnel openings for the SG line can be seen at distant right.
