The subject of the C&TS promoting XC - skiing as a possible activity to popularize winter traffic on the C&TS comes up periodically. As a former ski patroller, I believe the RR would be taking on considerable liability with such a venture with very little return to justify it. It would essentially be back-country skiing, not something for novices or even for those with more experience on groomed trails.
There's the risk of injuries, skiers getting lost during snow storms, hypothermia, etc. I could go on. Just how would a seriously injured skier would be evacuated within the "magic 1 hour" in a heavy snow storm? Also, the equipment needed for back country skiing is specialized and different that what most ski tourers own. Besides, back country skiers already have great road access to the high country, including Cumbres Pass itself. Snow shoeing as a promoted activity would involve less risk of injury but the other risks would still be there. Cross - country skiers have more popular options with groomed trails and facilities.
