William, I am happy that you like this photo of 493 at Cumbres. I would be interested in seeing the article that you are referring to. However I think that Steve Barry was not here in November 1966. In fact as, as I remember, I was the only person chasing the Cumbres turn and run through that day. That is the reason that the section man you see on the left side of the photo was the key helper in getting my VW beetle unstuck from the snow drift I was stalled in. I believe that the person you are thinking about is Frank Barry, one of the best photographers ever to record the Rio Grande narrow gauge, as well as other narrow gauges, such as those in Guatemala and El Salvador. I spent a couple of days chasing the narrow gauge with him in January/February 1964 when he was working for the Peace Corps in Chama. He left Chama not long after, but occasionally some of his incredible photos show up. He is famous for getting shots that no one else ever got. My guess is that you are thinking of photos Frank Barry took in the 1963-1964 time frame. If I am totally off base here, please let me know.
Anyway, here is a Frank Barry photo of one of the ex-Uintah mallets working freight in Guatemala as an example.
BTW, I have been waiting for a good time slot to post my adventures with Frank in 1964, but should do it pretty soon
