Thank You for sharing these stories and photos! The last shot ("eofmaitan-36(2).jpg") on the post I'm responding to reminds me of climbing Montgomery Pass on the S.P. / C&C, with the Sierras in the distance.
And I agree with John West regarding the 2nd "clutchless" photo immediately above — a smaller train in a bigger expanse of emptiness is hard to imagine! *

* This is about as close as I recall among Ernie's, but the mountains are much farther away (and the rails have been gone for fifty years)

The east end of the C&TS is about the only place in the U.S. where you might get something similar today, but you'll need a better camera & lens than I can afford
