I know the feeling well, Timothy!. One night my wife and I were returning home late at night and were approaching a level crossing at the edge of our town. Suddenly my wife yelled "STOP!!!" I slammed on the brakes, locking up all 4 wheels, and skidded to a stop just shy of the tracks. While doing this I looked over and there was the headlight of a GP9 RIGHT THERE coming at us. And then we realized we were looking at the full moon that had the yellowish appearance of a loco headlight seen from an angle, and was moving because the car was moving. And we sat there and laughed - don't know whether it was from relief or stupidity. We also realized the crossing flashers weren't flashing. But we were wide awake for awhile afterwards.
