...the Ghost of Jim Marcus. Old NG chasers will get that one. When I helped get the Nevada Northern up and running in 1987, some local clowns greased the track on the 3% grade to Copper Flat. On a good day, little #40 was on her knees with a 3-car train. We spun to a smokey stall, and with the brakes locked up and dragging, started sliding back down the hill. It was quite un-nerving. After an hour of sanding, it was apparent #40 was simply not going to get the strain started and we ended up doubling our 3- car train up the hill. In my case, I knew the grade leveled out a half mile behind us, so at a worst case, we would get stopped by then. Having this happen 11 miles up a 14 mils 4% grade could have cause a very serious problem.
Never did catch the guys, although several locals that helped us said they knew who they were.
I hope you catch the bastards, John. All you need to do if find the best video of the event. That guy would have the best location and best shot, as he knew exactly where to be....
