It almost had to either CRA #12, Poors book or a Slim Gauge News article. A quick skim finds the following:
1) Poor reports the tunnel passable until at least 1933, East Portal caved in by '44. Lantern at apex gone by '44.
2) CRA #12 reports (pg 144) that cave in occurred "sometime in the 1930's" and that people walking through prior to that time reported the lanterns "inside the east portal ...(used for the doors) still hanging on their hooks nearly 40 years after operations ceased" [40 years has to be a typo?, that would be ca. 1950!]
I'm 99 & 44/100% sure I saw a similar reference to the apex lantern in something I read 45 (not a typo!) years ago or so but i can't track it down right this minute, sorry.
Hank
btw, since the lantern at the apex was kept burning 24/7, I wonder how many times a day some poor schmuck had to hike in from Alpine Tunnel Station (presumably) to refill it? I'll bet that job went to the newest man on the section crew!
