I have finally had the time to put these photos up of a trip four of us made to the east and west portals in, I think, 1987. We drove to the east portal, then back to Hancock and over Hancock Pass to the west side. Spent the night at the west side, more or less where the current parking area is. We intended to go inside the tunnel on the west side, if it was at all possible. After considerable digging with a small folding shovel, we managed to create this access.
At the bottom of the hole, you can just see the top piece of the redwood arch.
This is what you saw lying on top of the dirt just inside the tunnel. We were very careful not to disturb any timbers! The partially shattered timber is the top of the arch.
This is the next set of arch timbering as you slide inside.
Here is the usual shot of the track under the water that is backed up at the west end entrance. This was taken on the way back out after the dirt had resettled from walking in and stirring it up.
And this is looking back at the little spot of light from the outdoors coming in through the hole we dug.
