You could still drive to the East Portal in 1988. I remember it as a rough road with the sections of old ties still in place of the right of way. The biggest challenge was turning around at the end.

You could also still crawl inside the East Portal where there was a small cavity. I'll have to dig out the grainy footage and post it on YouTube.
