One example of buildings on the National Register. Herington, KS about 15 years ago the SP went in at the wee hours of the morning and demolished the Rock Island depot and roundhouse. They were both down before dawn. The depot had been on the register, placed there by the city over the objections of the railroad. The city also expected the SP to restore the building, a beautiful limestone structure which was crumbling due to roof damage. After all the lawsuits were settled the railroad had to pay a small fine for failure to obtain a demolition permit.
