Dave always had stories. Some involved himself or his time with the Army Signal corps, others were retelling stories from his grandfathers, his father and even his brother.

His paternal line arrived in California in the 1780s from Mexico as part of the Spanish army protecting the frontier. His great, great grandfather married one of the Scandinavian women brought into California after the Gold Rush. Another branch of the Garcia side went to Mexico in the late 19th century to be part of the finance ministry and apparently these cousins were visited over the years. It was during these trips that Dave's father began collected various Maximilian items.

On Dave's mother side of the family there was a great grandfather that served during the Civil War as an Illinois volunteer artillery officer with the Army of the Potomac Before that he had served during the War with Mexico. And there were cousins that had connections to the Confederacy.

I made many railfaning/history road trips with Dave and worked with him at Orange Empire. I will miss him.
