I heard the same thing about Camp Hale at Pando (ex-narrow gauge). People who were stationed there said that the order to close Camp Hale was meant for a camp in Texas, but by the time that they mistake was sorted out, Camp Hale, Colorado was kindling and a memory.
I was lucky enough to know some men who were trained and stationed there in my youth.
They said that when the closure orders came through that big trenches were dug and that everything was dumped into them. Apparently there were a lot of M-1's still in the cosomline as well as motorized equipment, anything that would fit. This included ammunition.
I don't know how ownership has panned out at the former camp site. When I was young it was fenced, had warning signs placed all around the site and if you dallied too long there one of the local constabulary would arrive on site and have a word with you...
