My father tells the story of his voyage back from service in Europe after the war had ended there. He watched as the ships galley staff dumped what had to be a ton of butter overboard, prior to entering New York Harbor. He found out that if they had returned with a surplus of any consumables that the person in charge could have been at least demoted if not worse.
