Righto, Scott! I have struck out (stricken?) the "post-" from "post-processing", in my post at [ngdiscussion.net], above.

I agree, Scott -
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Same goes for ugly.
But IMHO the washed-out images are merely boring, whereas the garish ones produce a visceral reaction up to and including itchy teeth – depending on the intensity thereof. Also, most of the washed-out images seem to be best efforts by railfans who are not professional photographers to post scans of old and faded photos primarily because of their content rather than their innate value as stunning photographs, while the worst cases of over-saturation seem to be deliberate efforts to show off an expensive camera's extended low-light capabilities rather than to present a realistic illustration of an event that most of us have not been privileged to observe.
