John is correct about the steam/diesel distinction. This came directly from Charlie Bradshaw and in numerous discussions that I was involved with him during that time period, he would always make that distinction. I always thought it was skirting the issue, and I didn't really care, but Charlie thought it was very important. He also asserted that the bulk of the passengers didn't care about steam and just wanted the ride. And he was trying to bump up the bottom line with the rail car experiment.
He had pledged what ever it took financially to bring the line back from its precarious D&RGW level when he acquired it, but set a time limit that he would underwrite all the expenses above revenue. That came not too long after the roundhouse fire and the railroad had to do the best it could without much of his generous patronage.
