Skip, I lived in Newberg OR. for several years. When the SP owned the line running through town, the signals long,long short, long were adhered to at highway crossings. Then SP left and Portland & Western (or Willamette and Pacific if you prefer) took over the local short lines in the Northern Willamette. The whistles at Newberg crossings became whatever the engineer felt like. They ranged from a few short blasts to one long blast to nothing to whatever. This was the situation when we moved to Central Oregon two years ago. Now I am near the BNSF main line and it's back to the standard crossing signals.
