Since this thread has gone totally off track, I thought I would add two more off track items, before continuing with the original theme.
One of the four ALCO RS-1s that would have delivered the plutonium shipping car to the Union Pacific at Richland for forwarding to the "City of Portland" at Hinkle
In theory, the special Union Pacific move from Richland to Hinkle could have been shortened by adding the car to the fabulous "City of Hinkle" at Wallula for the run to Hinkle, but I am sure that never happened. But I did ride the "City of Hinkle" twice from Spokane to Wallula, a very scenic train ride thru the Palouse River gorge and along the Snake and Columbia rivers enjoyed only by a few. When I rode it, the train consisted of two E units, a baggage car, coach and about 80 freight cars, as seen here at Ayer Junction. Actually the UP's official designation was the unimaginative "Train 19", but we always called it the "City of Hinkle".
