Yes, you are correct, but the Canon verbiage I remember included that a decision would be made as stocks dwindled whether or not additional production runs would be made. The 1DXmarkiii is stated in places as the last pro DSLR body is a subtle statement of the end is near. Having seen this type of technological advancement accompanied by this verbiage several times doesn't bode well for the older products, especially in a market like cameras that facing stiff competition from cellphones that pretty much do everything a traditional camera does and more that fit in your back pocket.
On a technical note I've read some descriptions of the newer sensor construction and it sounds like the more advanced sensors are more three dimensional than emulsion of film stock was. Part of the shift to the mirrorless mount was to allow optics placed closer to the sensor that present the light as close to perpendicular as possible.
