Jessica,
I freely admit I am biased. I have been using Nikon cameras since 1961. Was an Air Force photographer/photojournalist from 1959 to 1981. Nikon was (still is) the standard camera for the Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard. I used Nikons in Vietnam as a combat photographer.
I hesitated a while before ordering a mirrorless. I love my Nikon D850 and have shot tons of photos with it. I use it with a vertical grip-battery pack. But it is a heavy camera. I am accustomed to carrying heavy cameras. In Nam I carried two Nikon FTNS and an M16 but I was only 29 years old then.
I got the Nikon Z7 two years ago and now I shoot the majority of my photos with it. It has the same resolution as the D850 and is so much lighter. I got a battery grip for mine which holds two batteries. The 45.7 megapixel files do soak up battery power. When I got my ride on the D&S log train, I used up one battery in the grip and was close to using up the other one in the grip (I did have two more batteries in my photo vest).
The lighter weight of the Z7 sure helped when I shot photos of the Rotary OY interior and the cab ride in 493.
The best camera reviews out there in my opinion are by Ken Rockwell.

Nikon now has three mirrorless....Z50, Z6, and Z7. The Z50 is DX format and the Z6 and Z7 are FX format (35mm size sensor). The Z7 has about double the resolution as the Z6 and obviously cost more. I like to have the highest resolution possible as that gives a greater dynamic range and gives better cropping options.
Nikon will probably introduce a Z8 or Z9 later this year or early next year. Will be 60 megapixels. May have two card slots and a true vertical grip (dual controls for vertical shooting).
The best place to keep up with Nikon is this site.

Cameras are like many things....cars, guns, boats, etc. people have their favorite brands. There are differences and I personally think Nikon but there are many good cameras. A camera is a tool and takes a good photographer to use the tool effectively.
