The first train, 8:00, has the ADA car 213 and has room for backpacks in the baggage compartment. That train stops at Rockwood, Tall Timber and Elk Park.
The second train, 8:45, stops at Cascade Canyon if needed, and Needleton. Needleton is often a long stop.
The third train, 9:30, handles most of the rafting as those tend to be long stops as well (though the rafting crews that help load and unload have it down to a science). This means that it will stop at Needleton or Cascade northbound depending on the water levels in the river. Southbound they stop at Tacoma to pick up the rafters and then Rockwood to unload. The boxcars are loaded early in the morning in Durango well before the crews arrive for that train. This is also the “clean up” train as it’s the last through the canyon and will pick up any stragglers if needed.
The water boxcars carry 2, 500 gallon tanks with fire hose and a pump and the crews are all trained on basic operation. It is a real trick to load up to 100 backpacks or rafting gear around this equipment while still leaving it available for use if needed.
Hope that helps.
