In the past at least, I believe that the last train bound for Silverton each day had one or more box cars up front in the consist. The primary purpose was fire fighting capability. I believe the box car carries water tanks and other fire fighting gear. They also typically had the capability to bring outsized passenger items such as bicycles, etc for those getting off at intermediate stops. Of course, this train would have the same capabilities on the run back to Durango.
