Probably more than rail replacement was required to upgrade the railroad.

A friend of mine repeated a story that his grandfather had told him. Grandfather was riding a Rio Grande standard gauge passenger train in the WWI era and they were passing a freight train waiting in a siding next to a river. Locomotive on the standing freight just rolled over into the river. Passenger train stopped and there was a scramble to rescue the engine crew.
